Author Siko diligently arrays facts, figures, frustrations, and challenges concerning his multiple attempts to file lawsuits against Florida’s medical and social service entities, focused on the prolonged suffering and death of his beloved wife, Beth. After he came home one day to find her lying on the floor, unable to stand because of a knee injury, he took her to an emergency room, where, after more than four hours, she was dismissed and informed that an X-ray showed no internal injuries. But still Beth couldn’t walk or move without extreme knee and leg pain accompanied by large, blackening bruises. Following numerous frustrating encounters within a multitude of medical institutions, a fractured tibia was identified, indicating that Beth should have been hospitalized at the first visit.
During two years of seeking treatment, Beth endured inadequate, sometimes needlessly painful regimens such as prolonged catheterizations and the neglect of staff who declared her needs too time-consuming. When Siko decided to file malpractice lawsuits, one legal consultant informed him that Florida’s legislation, spurred by medical lobbying, severely limited the types of cases he was pursuing. Nevertheless, after Beth passed away, Siko boldly persisted, uncovering the malpractice embedded in the state’s flawed medical system, protecting physicians’ profits by minimizing the possibility of patients like Beth receiving proper, potentially lifesaving, treatments.
Siko, a Korean War veteran with a career in manufacturing management, battled for several years against the notable flaws in Florida’s Sovereign Immunity Statutes and Medicare policies, determined to expose his wife’s torments from inadequate care. He avers that his efforts, though sometimes stifled by the limitations of those systems, have given him a cause—the opportunity to challenge insubstantial, at times corrupt, medical methodologies. Siko offers this data-weighted, meticulously detailed account as information for others facing similar legal contentions.
